We had a great Christmas, it was just the right amount of calm and crazy, the boys were thrilled with their gifts and we've been busy opening the boxes one at a time over the last few days and savoring each present. Quinn was funny and being two and still not completely getting it. He didn't want to get out of bed Christmas morning and he didn't want to open too many presents. He got a couple of gifts that he loved early on and that was enough. He was happy with the GeoTrax train and the Superman figure and didn't really want to open anything else. Milo has been enjoying his Nintendo DSi and I've been playing it with him. He needs a little help sometimes, so I'll step in and help him figure it out. The Batman Lego game is kind of fun!
We spent the morning at home opening gifts from each other and then we Skyped with my family in Canada. The kids opened their gifts from the Grandparents and Auntie and Uncle in front of the computer while they watched 2500 miles away. It's so wonderful that we can be together virtually for the years that we are here with Chris's family.
We cleaned up the paper and got to spend a little time with our new gifts before we got ready to visit Chris's family. Chris's Dad is sick with Leukemia and undergoing intensive chemo treatments and so the holiday was a bit subdued but I think we all appreciated that we were together and tried to enjoy each moment despite the rain cloud hanging over us. We all got another round of fabulous gift opening and we went home without any room left in the car.
This week after Christmas has been relaxing, Chris took some time off to spend with us and we have just been enjoying our gifts and being at home with each other. I got some wonderful things that I love, two new winter jackets, a book called the Beauty of Different by Karen Walrond that I am literally taking notes from, The Artist's Way book that I have been wanting for a while, a Kindle and some books on Geocaching. Chris got a book about building tree houses, a portable usb record player that can record a digital track from the record to your computer and two amazing box sets of music about Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen.
I have all these thoughts tumbling around in my head from the books I've been reading and it's the time of year when I set new goals and I have SO MANY things that I want to do. I barely know where to start and I'm so afraid that I won't finish any of it. Sometimes I wish I had ONE thing that I liked to do, so I could concentrate on that and do it well, but it's just not like that for me. I want to paint and write and photograph and knit and cook and build and create and read. I want to do it all, and be a fabulous parent and wife too. I will have lots of things to share with you this year.
More to come on Karen's amazing book, our plans for Geocaching in the spring, embracing the Artist's Way and becoming a better photographer. Chris has a book coming out in March that I can't wait to tell you about. I have been reading some pretty inspiring blogs lately that I want to share with you. There are more High School Mixed Tapes to pull together and more Books for Kids lists. I want to revisit my Life List and find a better way to display and reference it. And more stories, family stories, maybe not all mine. What about Birth stories? Not to mention whatever parenting challenges this year will bring. Potty Training! Gymnastics! Kindergarten! So, here's a big cheers to 2011! This is going to be a good year that will be very productive and I am totally looking forward to it.
I'll leave you with this fabulous song and video by Metric. Thanks, dear sister, for telling me about them. They are Canadian (I heart Canadians) and the video is shot in NYC. Can you spot my favorite street in Chinatown and what I think is the ceiling of the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall subway station? It sums up how I want to feel this year with the energy and the running and the music and the black and white treatment. I'm also asking the same question that they do: Is it ever going to be enough? I don't think it ever will be, but I've just got to keep trying.
